Recreation Needs Study
In collaboration with CRED Consulting
Location: Inner West
Client: Inner West Council
Project Dates: 2018
The Inner West Council area (the Inner West) is an urban area with approximately 192,000 residents, covering an area of 36km2 from Balmain in the north, Newtown in the east, Tempe in the south and Croydon in the west. This study provide the evidence base to inform the development of Council policy and strategy in relation to the recreation needs of the Inner West for the next 10 years. Providing for the varied recreation needs of a diverse community, with limited space, will mean that recreation spaces and activities have to support flexible uses, support sharing and conviviality, and reduce conflict between users.
Gallagher Studio worked closely with Cred Consulting to deliver ideas and applications based on the key themes/ drivers of sharing, generosity, co-design and quality. Strategies explored recreational value of the wider public domain including streets, laneways, paths and trails and the importance of improving connection to nature. The applications illustrated themes as diverse as mutipurpose design for active sports, reclaiming left over spaces and lanes for play, imporving walking oportunities and providing exploratory and free play. Applications also tested ways to address conflict and improved shared space (such as between people and wildlife, cyclists and walkers, different genders).
